Duel (1971)

Steven Spielberg ain't exactly the coolest kid on the block no more. Indiana Jones 4 and his remake of War of the Worlds were terrible, terrible, terrible movies.

Yuck.

But the guy has made some amazing films in his lifetime. So lets go back to the very beginning, and take a look at the first feature he ever did, when he was still a young and promising director, showing so much potential.

Duel is one bad-ass film! And it's such a simple premise: A guy overtakes a truck.

And that's it! No aliens or treasure hunters or dinosaurs.

Just a guy driving a car, past a truck.

To take a such simple idea and turn it into an engrossing 90 minute on-the-edge-of-your-seat story, is testament to his greatness, and pretty much explains how he got to where he is today.

  1. Duel is probably my favorite Spielberg. As you say, cinema reduced to its simplest terms.

  2. My only issue with the DVD is the different sound effects and poor sound normalisation when it was "remastered" the VHS version sound effects fitted much better.

  3. I was not aware of that. Does this also apply to the bluray releases?
