Martyrs (2008)

VIOLENCE. TORTURE. DEATH. BLOOD.

POW!

This film doesn't wait to build up suspense, before ending in an epic climax. It's there from the very start. Thick, sticky, blood practically drips from the DVD.

"This is the sickest shit I have ever seen," said a friend when we watched this together. And it certainly is pretty fucked up, giving a total "you-want-to-look-away-but-you-just-can't"-effect. This soon-to-be cult film will make you cringe and whine and shake your head to no end. It really gets to you.

And it should. Remember, it's supposed to be a horror movie. It tries to make you horrified, and it succeeds. That is what makes it good.

But what defines a really good horror film is that beneath all the blood and guts and grueling violence, there's actually a message or two to be found. Existential torture, you might say. It is certainly there in Martyrs too, but do you have the stomach to dive down into the pools of blood to find it?

If so, then you should watch it now, before the Hollywood remake comes out.

WARNING: If you got scared by Paranormal Activity, then this film is certainly not for you. This is some advanced sick shit!

  1. Tiger, I downloaded this movie a while ago and just finished watching.

I believe I just lost a part of my soul. Fuck any movie anyone ever made, that one is tougher.
I think most people actually can't get to the end of it.

  2. yeah, it sure is something else. I'm glad it disturbed you. =)

I've got a bunch of other hard-hitting horror and documentaries lined up here now, which I'm sure you'll enjoy too. August will be a blood splattered month.
